When we think back 10 or 20 years ago about the future of digital marketing, the latest trends at the time seem almost archaic and outdated today. In that same respect, thinking 10 or 20 years in the future and how we will reach our customers and prospects produces that same level of innovation and adaptability that it did in the past – whether it was social media marketing, interactive prospect development, or other digital marketing trends.

It can be particularly challenging to predict how specific behaviors will influence customer behavior five or ten years from now, so what does the future of digital marketing trends look like, and what are some of the trends?

The first one you’re certain to hear more about is the dominance of artificial intelligence (AI). The opportunity and pervasiveness of AI is growing so fast that those who fail to recognize the opportunities it provides will be at risk of falling behind over the next several years. Suppliers will use AI products and services, customers will expect or demand AI offerings, and the ability to reduce costs will cause most business to use AI as well.

Expanding AI-based technology and chatbots with real-time instant messaging capabilities will continue to be an important aspect of future digital marketing trends. Research shows that chatbots will power over 80% of customer service this year. The advantages and benefits lie in their 24-hour service capabilities, instant responses to customer questions, and the sheer amount of money they will help businesses save.

For businesses that want to stay ahead of the pack with future digital marketing trends, personalization is one of the buzzwords to keep in mind. Unlike previous digital marketing trends where you might have been able to send out generic sales blasts, consumers are more likely to do business with companies who offer personalized experiences, which over 85% of consumers find appealing. Think about it; who doesn’t get annoyed with an anonymous, generic advertisement now?

Over the next decade, video advertising and marketing will continue to grow at a significant rate, making it an important trend to incorporate into your current digital marketing plans if you haven’t already. Not only is it the most popular method customers like to learn about new products, but it’s also highly effective with increasing consumer confidence to the point of converting to an online purchase. According to Hubspot marketing data, 68 percent of respondents most prefer to learn about a new product or service via a short video, compared to only 15 percent who prefer text-based articles or posts.
